Relevant key points of bilge pumps
Do you Need One Bilge Pump or Two?
If your hull has separate compartments that can collect water, you will need multiple pumps. The water needs to be removed from each compartment, so a pump is required in each compartment. However, even if your hull has only one compartment, you may still need two pumps.
Pumps that are large enough to handle emergency situations require large-diameter discharge hoses. The only problem with large hoses is that keeping the bilge dry is not ideal. After the pump is turned off, the water remaining in the hose will pour back to the bottom of the ship, and a small amount of water (such as rainwater) cannot be pumped out.
In order to keep the bilge dry, you need to install a small pump at the lowest point of the hull and place a larger pump at a higher position in an emergency. Large pumps can be connected to the float switch. When set higher, the pump will not stay in a small amount of water, so the service life of more expensive pumps can be extended.
How to maintain your bilge pump
After completing the installation, make sure to maintain the bilge pump regularly. Don't let it become out of sight and confusing thinking. Regularly checking whether the bilge pump is working properly can reduce the risk of problems when it is most needed.
Bilge pumps need to be protected to prevent ingestion of foreign objects that may cause blockage. A strainer or filter built into the body can keep any garbage and materials out of the bilge pump. Clean all foreign objects on the screen. If the float switch is protected by a screen protector, clean the protector. Remove bilge water as it may contain oil, fuel and chemicals. Check all hoses and connections. Test each bilge pump first in manual mode and then in automatic mode.
Choose the right bilge pump
A bilge pump is something you hope you will never need. But in an emergency, it may be the most critical safety device, which can protect your boat from capsizing and keep people on board from drowning.
